Beethoven IV, February 24, 2024

Concert. February 24, 2024. 3:00 PM.

1st concert segment. Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor, Op. 37.

This concerto is generally believed to have been composed in 1800, although the year of its composition has been questioned by some contemporary musicologists. It was first performed on April 5, 1803, with the composer as soloist.

This concerto is in three movements:

I. Allegro con brio
II. Largo
III. Rondo. Allegro – Presto

On today’s concert, Dr. Clara Park joins us again as Guest Piano Soloist. The Columbia County Orchestra has enjoyed a wonderful musical partnership with her, and her husband, Dr. Martin Jones for several years.

Following the piano concerto, there will be a brief intermission.

II. Beethoven Symphony No. 3 (nicknamed Eroica), in E flat Major, Op. 55. Beethoven is supposed to have originally dedicated this symphony to Napoleon Bonaparte while he was First Consul of France, but to have destroyed the title page of the score upon hearing that Napoleon had declared himself Emperor; it was finally dedicated to Prince Maximilian Lobkowitz, one of the composer’s greatest friends from the time of his arrival at Vienna in 1792.

The first performance of this symphony took place on April 7, 1805, in the Vienna Theatre at one of Franz Clement’s concerts, with Beethoven conducting.

The symphony is in four movements:
I. Allegro con brio
II. Adagio assai
III. Scherzo Allegro vivace
IV. Finale Allegro molto.
